HEALTHY GREEN HOMES LIMITED

Condensation and mould

At some time or another most homes suffer from condensation, this can lead to mould problems in homes.

Prolonged exposure to mould spores is not healthy, there is medical evidence that mould spores cause breathing problems such as asthma. I myself have visited many homes that suffer from mould and there is a high coincidence with one or more residents suffering from asthma.

Condensation related mould is a complex subject with many factors having an influence, but it can be stopped.

7 years of day-to-day experience in visiting homes has given me an insight into this problem and how to eradicate it. Stopping the need for regular mould washes and redecoration, but more importantly creating a healthy indoor environment.

I have built strong links with trusted specialist suppliers and tradesmen who when combined with my knowledge and specifications can provide working cost effective solutions.

Most homes often suffer from mould staining on the silicone around baths and showers, it’s a simple fix that can be done by the resident. I’m more than happy to share at no cost.

Mould staining on the silicone around the bath and limescale build up on tiles and tile grout.

Mould staining on the silicone can be quite bad but it can be cleaned, there is a trick to it and this could take a 2 to 3 nights. Before bedtime pour some thick bleach onto the mould discoloured silicone and then press some rolled up toilet paper into the bleach so that it’s fully in contact with the bleach and soaked with bleach, then leave it over night, in the morning remove the toilet paper and discard in the toilet. Most of the black mould staining will be gone, depending how bad it was it might take 2 or 3 nights. The mould will return in time, it always does! As soon as you see it repeat the bleach and toilet paper trick.

This works on window frames too.

Removing the orangey limescale from the tile grout and indeed the less visible limescale from the tiles takes longer but with minimal effort. Mix up some white vinegar and water in a spray bottle, approximately 20% white vinegar. You can add half a table spoon of washing up liquid but that isn’t necessary it just makes it smell a bit nicer, but you will still smell the vinegar, after a while you won’t notice the smell. After every shower or bath spray the mixture onto the tiles, bath screen if you have one or the shower curtain, then just leave it. The white vinegar does two things, it gradually softens the limescale and secondly it also causes the water to run off the tiles and surfaces and down the plug hole. This means the water doesn’t dry and evaporate into the air adding to the condensation in the bathroom. This needs to be done after every shower or bath even if only 30 mins apart, this might seem a bit of a task but it only takes 30 seconds.

The result will be that after 5 to 6 weeks the limescale will have become soft, now you can go mad when you next shower or bath and using a kitchen sponge/scourer rub the tile joints and tiles, they will look as good as new again. But keep using the vinegar spray after every shower or bath, the limescale will be very slow to return, in fact it will take years, years in which you won’t need to scrub the tiles or grout.
